The White Mountain Apache Education Department is pleased to announce the 3rd Annual Youth Conference July 11-15 at Theodore Roosevelt School on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation.
“The past few years, we have been able to provide a good quality conference for our Apache youth focusing on our identity as Apache people and the social impacts on our youth. The conference has grown since its inaugural year, and this year we are focusing on Apache Identity, Healthy Lifestyles, Education and Youth Leadership. We are excited to provide our community with a dynamic conference filled with activities, fun, entertainment and the promotion of our Apache youth,” stated Harrisen DeClay, Education Director.
The 3rd Annual Apache Youth Conference will host White Mountain Apache youth ages 8-18. The Conference will host ages 8-13 on July 11 and July 12 and ages 14-18 on July 13 and July 14 and all ages for the Back to School Bash on July 15. The daily Conference itinerary for all age groups is as follows:
- 7 a.m. Registration/Sign-In
- 7:30 a.m. Breakfast
- 8:30 a.m. Opening Session
- 9:30 a.m. Session 1: Healthy Lifestyles, Apache Identity, Youth Leadership, and Success through Education
- 10:30 a.m. Session 2: Healthy Lifestyles, Apache Identity, Youth Leadership, and Success through Education
- 11:30 a.m. General Session w/Dr. Pearl Yellowman
- 12 p.m. Lunch
- 1:30 p.m. General Session w/Dr. Pearl Yellowman
- 2:30 p.m. Session 3: Healthy Lifestyles, Apache Identity, Youth Leadership, and Success through Education
- 3:30 p.m. Session 4: Healthy Lifestyles, Apache Identity, Youth Leadership, and Success through Education
- 4:30 p.m. Closing Session
Each session will consist of workshops focused on Apache Identity including history, language, food and clans, Healthy Lifestyles including fitness/health, alcohol and substance abuse prevention, Success through Education, and Youth Leadership. Throughout the day youth will rotate to different workshops and will have an opportunity to attend and participate in each workshop.
General Sessions will be led by Dr. Pearl Yellowman and special guests Butchie Eastman and Antoine Edwards. Sessions will provide activities, prizes and an opportunity for youth to participate with special guests.
White Mountain Apache Vice Chairman Kasey Velasquez said, “The White Mountain Apache Tribe is at a defining moment in our Tribe’s history. The youth are the future of our Tribe and it is important that we continuously invest into our Apache youth. As Tribal Leaders, it is our job to create opportunity for our youth and this conference is an opportunity for our youth to come together, learn their Apache identity, learn how to protect themselves from the social challenges our community faces and develop leadership skills that will advance our people and have a good time in the process.”
On July 15 the Conference will host the annual Back to School Bash open to all Apache youth. The Back to School Bash will feature games, entertainment, lunch and special appearances by renowned hand drum and hip-hop artists Butch & Antoine, a mini-college fair, presentations by tribal departments and programs, and back to school items for youth.
