RMG Announces 2017 Apache Players of the Year

Rez Media Group announces the 2016-2017 All Apache Team Players and Coaches of the Year.

2016-2017 high school basketball season is in the books and it was an exciting season of basketball as Apache reservation teams were represented in the post season including Alchesay boys and girls, Dishchii’bikoh boys and girls, San Carlos boys and girls, Ft. Thomas boys and girls, as well as teams who have Apache ball players on their teams including Valley Christian girls, Blue Ridge boys, and Globe boys teams.

Rez Media Group is proud to recognize the following girls varsity players who have received the honor of Apache Players of the Year:

No. 23 Evette George of Alchesay Lady Falcons – Senior Point Guard who led the Lady Falcons with 13.2 ppg, 4 rpg, and a 17-11 overall record as the 2A North Regional Runner – Up team who also defeated the state’s number 1 team the Thatcher Lady Eagles in the second round of the 2A State Tournament. The Lady Falcons earned a trip to the Final Four and fell to eventual State Champions Valley Lady Pirates.

No. 23 Portia Goseyun of Dishchii’bikoh Lady Wildcats – Senior Point Guard has led the Lady Wildcats this season in a successful and winning season who made it to the 1A State Tournament in Prescott Valley.  Dishchii’bikoh Lady Wildcats ended their season to St. Michael 49-64.

No. 15 Kiara Goseyun of Ft. Thomas Lady Apaches – Senior Guard averaged 13.1 ppg this season as well as 2.0 rpg, 2.6 apg, 1.5 spg, her leadership on and off the court earned her the Conference Offense Player of the Year, 1st Team All Region for 1A East Region and the Region Player of the Year.  Lady Apaches made it to the Final Four as the 1A number 1 seed in the state overall power rankings, Ft. Thomas lost to eventual State Champion St. Michael 41-42.

No. 30 Siena Vataha of Blue Ridge Lady Yellow Jackets – Senior Guard was a crucial part of teamwork for Blue Ridge this season. Vataha connected on 38 three pointers her Senior season and her leadership and drive on the court helped Blue Ridge complete a successful season.

No. 0 Angie Andreas of Valley Christian Lady Trojans – Senior Post has played varsity basketball all four years in the Lady Trojans basketball uniform. She averaged 5.3 ppg, 3.4 apg, 5.6 rpg, 1.7 spg, and helped her squad to a overall 26-3 record and defeated North powerhouse Page Lady Sand Devils 41-40 to capture the 3A Girls State Championship in Glendale.

Rez Media Group is proud to recognize the following boys varsity players who have received the honor of Apache Players of the Year:

No. 15 Darrien Burnette of Blue Ridge Yellow Jackets – Sophomore who helped his team to a 28-16 record and to the 2nd round of the 3A State Tournament averaging 13.6 ppg, 2.1 apg, 3.7 rpg, 1.8 spg and scored 554 points this season including 81 three-pointers.

No. 10 Tristen Upton of Alchesay High School – Junior who helped the Falcons to a 12-0 2A North record and a overall 34-3 record ending the season as the 2A State Runner-Up losing to power house Gilbert Christian and averaging 18.4 ppg, 1.3 apg, 6.3 rpg, 2.5 spg and scored 589 points this season.

No. 5 Robert BJ Burries of Globe High School – Sophomore who averaged 26.3 ppg with an 82% free throw percentage, 5.1 rpg, 4.6 spg, 4.2 apg and was Top 5 in Arizona for scoring with 790 points this season.  Burries now has 1,484 career points.  In his last 10 regular season games he averaged 38 ppg. Globe Tigers lost to Valley Christian in the 2nd round of the 3A State Tournament.

No. 23 John Cutter, Jr. of San Carlos High School – Senior averaging 16.4 ppg, 2.2 apg, 7.2 rpg, 2.1 spg and scored a total of 452 points this season. Cutter helped lead the Braves to a successful season winning the 2A South Region title and ending their season at 24-5. San Carlos ended their season in the 2A State Tournament Final Four.  Cutter was instrumental in the Braves 2016 Division 5 State Championship team and continued his leadership on and off the court in his senior year.

No. 23 Isaiah Tre Smith of Dishchii’bikoh High School – Senior averaging 17.4 ppg, 2.3 apg, 3.2 rpg and scored 547 points his senior year. He has started all four years for the Wildcats. During the game against Seligman Smith scored 47 points which included 10 three-pointers. Wildcats finished the season at 17-8 in the 1A Boys State Tournament.

Rez Media Group is proud to recognize the following boys and girls varsity coaches who have received the honor of Apache Teams Coach of the Year:

Girls Coach of the Year Lee Haws – Ft. Thomas Lady Apaches 

Haws coached his team to an overall 28-3 record which included a 3rd place trophy in the annual Eastern Arizona Holiday Tournament, a 3rd place trophy at the Chandler Prep New Years Classic, and Ft. Thomas winning their sixth consecutive 1A East Regional Tournament Championship leading to Ft. Thomas being ranked number one seed for the 1A State Tournament.

Boys Coach of the Year Kyle Goklish – Alchesay Falcons

Goklish coached the Falcons to an incredible season with a overall 34-3 record with losses coming early in the season to rival Blue Ridge Yellow Jackets and losing in overtime to St. Joseph’s during the White Mountain Holiday Classic. The Falcons ended the season as the 2A North Regional Champions and the  2A State Runners-Up.
